Mainland Dating owner Jane Metcalfe 41 , of Dunedin, said since the speed-dating business started in Dunedin in , it had put more than couples in committed relationships and resulted in more than weddings and the birth of more than babies.
The business had expanded to include Invercargill, Timaru and Christchurch but demand had ”dropped off” and speed-dating nights stopped in Timaru in , Invercargill in and in Dunedin last month. She continued the events in Christchurch but said they would not be held in Dunedin again until more people signalled they wanted the service. She believed the decline in demand was due to people using dating technology on smartphones, but said she would not change her business model to include a smartphone app.
I want actual people to meet other actual people because that’s how the world works and I hope the world continues to work that way, but smartphones are changing the way people communicate. New Zealand’s little piece of Scottish heritage lies in the South Island. Dunedin, named after the Gaelic for Edinburgh, “Dun Edin,” was founded by Presbyterian Scottish immigrants, and that legacy can still be proudly felt today. Small and extremely hilly-the city lays claim to the steepest residential street in the world-Dunedin is tucked into the inner corner of Otago Harbour’s wild and windswept coastline, with rugged beaches, raw clifftop landscapes, and even the world’s only mainland colony of royal albatross, right on the city’s doorstep.
The town center itself is compact and easily navigated on foot, with many fine examples of late 19th-century architecture still well preserved. To find out more about the top attractions in this beautiful city, be sure to review our list of the top attractions in Dunedin New Zealand. Larnach Castle. Dunedin’s top tourist attraction is Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle. It was built in the late 19th-century by wealthy banker William Larnach who made his fortune during Otago’s gold rush years.
Despite Larnach’s wealth and career success, he led a tragic life, with both his wife and favorite daughter dying young. In , while serving as a politician in Wellington, he committed suicide. After his death, the castle fell into decline, serving as an asylum, soldiers’ barracks, and nunnery until it was purchased by the Barker family in who undertook a mammoth restoration project to restore the castle to its former grandeur. Today, this fascinating building is full of period furniture, and its gorgeous sprawling gardens are open to the public to explore.
Although it’s about 14 kilometers outside downtown Dunedin, you won’t want to miss the views from the castle tower or the chance to enjoy a high-tea in the old ballroom. Official site: www.

Speed dating is coming to an age group where life is usually slowing down. People aged 60 to 75 — typically ignored by the dating-business scene — will have an opportunity to meet singles of a similar vintage in Christchurch next month. Mainland Dating owner Jane Metcalfe is bringing her age-specific speed-dating event to Christchurch on June 9. During speed dating, singles spend just a few minutes talking to potential partners before moving on to the next.
Couples are generally allotted four minutes per date. But Metcalfe allows the older age group slightly longer. The Press spoke to one of Metcalfe’s successful couples who did not want to use their surnames. Biddy, 68, was living by herself in a caravan in Waihola, south of Dunedin, when she came across the advertisement in a newspaper. Biddy said she talked about “life in general” during the four-minute speed dates.
Biddy’s match was year-old Alby, whose “beautiful sunglasses” caught her eye. On their date she sat in his car, he removed the sunglasses and put them in his pocket.
